This year, AIA South Dakota is celebrating its 75th year of existence.
AIA SD’s first annual convention, then branded as the “annual meeting” was held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1951 in Sioux Falls with 16 architects in attendance. The schedule featured two speakers, Walter Vivrett and Norman C. Nagle, both assistant professors from the University of Minnesota School of Architecture.
The two discussed “trends on contemporary education of the architects,” according to an Associated Press report.
Vivrett was an authority on urban design and housing who later served as an architectural consultant for the U.S. Public Housing Administration and helped direct the Minnesota Experimental City project, according to the Minneapolis Star.
Nagle, a partner in Graffunder, Nagle and Associates, designed the Longfellow Park shelter in Minneapolis, Mt. Hope Lutheran Church School in Bloomington, the Excelsior Post Office and the Hastings Public Library, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
