A Debt to LEGO

When CNN (or any other mainstream news agency) shares something about architecture, I’m always interested. This was an nice “fluffy” find this weekend:

I’m one of those architects who owe a debt to LEGO for sparking and fostering a curiosity about the built environment from an early age. This sentiment is fairly pervasive in the industry, and I was even instructed to NOT write about the influence LEGO had on me for grad school applications regarding “why I want to be an architect.” They’ve heard it all before. That doesn’t mean I didn’t attempt to create my own LEGOs with the school’s 3D printer (and feature the process in my portfolio).

Hopefully there isn’t some copyright infringement here… this was only moderately successful and purely academic…

After reading the CNN article, I was fascinated by the feature toward the end regarding the Tate Modern exhibition that allowed the public to build a city of the future (and have this on display as art). I’m considering making this part of my design process, though I’m hoping future designs won’t end up with a grid of short cylinders at the top every 10 feet or so on center…

If nothing else, my allegiances are pretty clear, and now you all know what to get me for Christmas. You can address packages to TSP’s Sioux Falls office.

For those architects reading this, did LEGO influence you to enter the field? Given the number of offices I’ve visited that have LEGOs somewhere, I an imagine what the majority of answers will be…
